Our School Journal: Entry 32

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…

We got to see our new baby on the ultrasound this week and got some beautiful 4D pictures. Now, I absolutely cannot wait for D-day, and the kids too are just so excited. They were at the fridge this morning talking about their new baby and looking at the pictures. Then, they hugged my belly and told the baby “good morning.” We’re getting so close!

Also, on my blog this week, I’ve been taking readers on a tour of how we use Usborne Books in our homeschool and listing our favorites in each subject:

This is also the last day of the giveaway for an Usborne Encyclopedia, so be sure to enter if you have not already.

In our homeschool this week…

While our lives have been absolutely jam-packed with activity, our homeschool time seems to be pretty relaxed at this point. My son, who only has about 10 pages left in K5 phonics, is doing a little review and reading lots of stories. I’m wanting to create a reading chart for him with titles of the books I want him to read and a place for him to check off all the people he has read to. I figured this would also be a way to keep him busy while I’m delivering and carrying for a newborn.

In math, I’ve shelved A Beka once again. They began introducing the eight family of addition in the worksheets, and we haven’t yet mastered all of 5, 6, or 7. But, in God’s grace, I have found some really helpful resources to supplement, and I can’t wait to share them with you all. Overall, we’ve had a lot of fun with math this week. And we’ve seen some progress, which is exciting for all of us.

My daughter finished up the letter “P” this week, with princesses, pumpkins, and flower pots. She was definitely in her element with all of it.

Things I’m working on…

My theme for this week in my home has been simplicity, trying to find ways to simplify our daily lives. Blogging has been a key one, and I’ve been really excited to see God guide and direct as I make decisions on how to slow down. One of the ways I’m simplifying is by allowing others to help. For instance, carrying the load of promoting my ebook Praying Proverbs 31 has been a strain on my time; this week, I announced an affiliate program for the book—allowing others to promote the book on their blogs for a 20% commission. I’ve seen the Lord really work through that decision already! And it’s been a true blessing.

Another tremendous blessing has been beginning “Memorizing the Mount”from Ann Voskamp’s blog. By working on just a couple of verses each week, I’ll be memorizing Matthew 5-7 over the course of this year. I have enjoyed it so much these last couple of days, meditating on God’s Word and focusing my day around it.

And, in keeping with my resolve to simplify, I’m going to cut this post short as well. So, hope you all have a restful weekend as we head into the last days of January.
