Our School Journal-Entry 7

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…

The little one got her first hair cut this week. Look at her sitting so still!

In our homeschool this week…

We’ve started our summer school and really had so much fun. It’s all I had hoped it would be.

Van Gogh Picture Study
Nature Study: Exploring the Five Senses
Handel's Water Music and a pool party

My favorite thing this week was…

All the visits from the mail carrier! Our new books have been arriving–for the summer and for the next school year, and it has been so exciting to open up the packages and see all those shiny new books. My son gets excited every time he hears a truck now.

What’s working/not working for us…

I have really been pleased with the success of the Van Gogh/Handel study. I wasn’t sure how well the kids would do with it, considering how small they are. But they have loved it. And it has opened up some great discussions (see next heading).

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

Was Van Gogh a Christian? My son asked if Van Gogh went to heaven, and I had to tell him that I wasn’t sure, that I didn’t know what he believed about Christ. I do know that he worked for a church for awhile, and that his passion was helping the poor. I couldn’t find anything about the man’s faith. Does anyone else know?

He seemed to lead such a sad life.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

I’ll be contributing twice a month over at a new blog for new homeschoolers: Growing Your Homeschool. I love the concept of all of us coming together as a community of homeschoolers and providing help and encouragement in the journey. There are nine other wonderful ladies with extremely varied approaches and backgrounds contributing to the blog, which means there is a lot to be offered for everyone, no matter your style or experience. Be sure to come visit!

And, I’d love your ideas and suggestions for posts. What do YOU think a new homeschooler would need to know? Do you have any questions you’d like to see answered?

  1. I love your son’s artwork! We too are receiving books right and left – love to hear that doorbell ring! As a new homeschooling mom, I’d want to know all of the legal requirements first. The hardest part for me as I was researching this journey was information overload. And it turned out that a small handful of good resource-type, well-written books were all that I really needed. Is there a way to streamline the blog so newbies don’t become overwhelmed and frustrated? I think some newcomers may give up if there’s too much “stuff” to filter. Loved reading about your week! Sadly, I do not know about Van Gogh’s faith.

  2. Love new books! That’s probably my favorite part of homeschooling. I don’t know that I have ever come across anything referring specifically to Van Gogh’s faith. That’s a really good question.

  3. We are doing summer school as well and the kids are loving it! What are you using for the Van Gogh/Handel study? We have incorporated minimal art for the summer and have yet to incorporate music.
We won’t be ordering anything until Fall, but I LOVE when the curriculum starts pouring in as do my kids.
How exciting that you are going to be a part of Growing Your Homeschool! I can’t wait to check it out.

Marcee, we are using a unit study from Harmony Fine Arts for our Van Gogh/Handel study. It’s only $4 for the art/music set. A pretty bare-bones curriculum (as far as lesson plans go) that also includes coloring pages, notebook pages, and many helpful links to allow you to flesh it out in a way that fits your family. I’m really enjoying it. Thanks for stopping by!
