Our School Journal-Entry 6

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…

We are wrapping up and gearing up at the same time–wrapping up our spring schedule and gearing up for our summer schedule. This week will be the end of our K4 materials, and next week we begin some Kindergarten work.

In our homeschool this week…

We’ve been doing lots of K4 assessments this week, both from the A Beka K4 material and from Letter of the Week assessments. The letters Z and X have been our focus, as well as reviewing our math facts (recognition 1-20, counting by 10s, counting to 100, addition facts for 1+ table). But I’ve also thrown in a number of educational games, for review and just to keep the “Mo” going as we transition out of one schedule and into another.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We have a couple of celebration dinners to attend this weekend, but really it’s going to be a pretty quiet weekend–compared to the last couple of weeks.

My favorite thing this week was…

I have really enjoyed following along in the Ministry of Motherhood book club, which is rather ironic since I don’t own the book. I’ve been following the Bible reading plan, watching the great video links, and reading the many inspiring posts from the other women who are reading the book. Even from the outside looking in, it has been a tremendous journey. This week the focus has been on giving our children the gift of grace, showing grace as we have received it from Christ. What’s working/not working for us…

Focusing on anything has been difficult this week. So glad we are switching to a new schedule next week. It’s just been a weird week for all things catastrophic. The little one, who has done so well with her markers all year, has suddenly taken to drawing on everything but her paper. And my son has really been bucking our Poster Center time. So, I’ve started putting review charts and flashcards into his actual workbox pockets and letting him handle it himself. He’s done well with that, and it frees me up a little bit to take charge of the other catastrophes in the making.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…

Thank you for all the great summer schedule suggestions last week! I’m posting our summer schedule and previewing some of our materials on Monday.

I had another question I had thought of earlier this week that I wanted to ask all of you, and now I can’t think of it. SIGH. It’s been one of those weeks it seems.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

On Monday, I’m starting a “21 days of prayer” challenge with the Warrior Prayers ebook, praying Scripture for our sons (and daughters). Come join me!

  1. We aren’t taking much of a break here, but since I have a bunch of kids, I will need a few weeks to do my planning before jumping back in. Visiting from HMJ.

  2. Tracy,
Thank you for including the “Women in the Word Wednesdays” link – I’d love to read and follow along. Sounds wonderful and uplifting. I can relate to the writing on all surfaces! As I look at my walls, I can see stray pencil marks and my son attacked the kitchen blinds with a bright red marker (luckily Basic H works really well to remove those marks!) We’ll be homeschooling through June and then mom needs a short break to breathe, catch up on organizing and purging, read a book for fun, and then delve back into learning! I look forward to returning to your site!

I’m following along with Jolanthe at Blog Frog. Like I said, I don’t have the book but the study has been great.
I’m also doing a similar study through the book of James, an email Bible study group. If you’re interested you can email me at tracy(dot)growingngrace(at)gmail(dot)com.

And, I’ll be taking one-week off in August. I figured I’d need more time to plan next year than I would need to plan this summer. Besides, I just can’t wait to get into our nature study activities.

  3. Visiting from HMJ…I remember doing the letter of the week with my youngest…brings back great memories.

  4. Where is this Ministry of Motherhood book club happening?! I picked up “Seasons of a Mother’s Heart” at convention. I think I need to read “ministry”, too!!

  5. New follower and joiner on the homeschool mother’s journal. We are starting kindergarten this year as well. My son is coming out of a public school prek program. It will be nice to follow you on your journey as we take ours as well. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
